Hero

A Hero: a man/woman distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength. "someone who fights for a cause"

Synonyms: Champion, fighter, hero, paladin, defender, guardian, protector, shielder.

Never ending stories have been told of great men and women of old who possessed exceptional courage, nobility and strength,. Legend has it that they still live amongst us.

As long as adversity has existed, there have always existed tales and legends of great men and women of valor. Men and women of exceptional courage, nobility, and strength. And at times these stories just seem Soo farfetched because it seems as if the very nature of human beings is to be selfish, and so when we hear stories of heroes aside from the fact that they possess physical and sometimes unnatural powers and attributes the very core concept of a hero is that which goes against our nature as human beings. And yet we hear stories of people unlike the mythical creatures of old, possessing super powers but ordinary men and women who stood up for the weak and protected the innocent and did the extraordinary, well maybe they weren’t ordinary people after all.

I have always wanted to meet a Hero as we have heard Soo many stories of them, you dream they would come in capes flying through the air, they would have great physical strength and they would be able to do all sorts of magical things, I looked for those heroes and I dint find any until I looked a little closer….

She led the way as my colleagues and I followed behind into a room whose door had bars, before we could enter the room we were greeted by a foul smell, we stopped on our track and she noticed it, she turned and said “please don’t mind the smell, we try what we can to clean up always, it's just that some of the medication we give them makes them lose control of their bowels as a side effect, and so working here,….well you just get used to it”, she turned and continued going in as we followed from behind, when we entered the room we saw a few patients, and the scene was as if its one of those from a horror movie, one patient was staring at the wall without moving, her eyes fixed at a particular point on the wall, the other was bowing down on the floor oblivious to the entourage that just came in, one of the patients that looked more excitable rushed towards her and started conversing with her. If it was me the first thing I would have done was to take a few steps back and cover my mouth but she calmly conversed with the patient as if talking to an old friend, she was smiling, making eye contact, and even making jokes, how she could do that was astounding to me. From one room to the next, she calmly led the way while explaining what happens in each section, at every point, she emphasized the care and love we should show to the patients.

Who is she you ask, she is the Matron of the psychiatry department. After the first tour, I sat down and thought just how much it would take to wake up every day and come to a place like this to work with these people and still be able to address each patient even those that had soiled themselves with as much respect as she did. In my interactions with her before the tour I had discovered that she was one of the most pleasant people iv ever met, ever smiling and with an ever-cheerful countenance. Every time I remember this woman I can't imagine her without a smile. After all this it suddenly hit me, she’s a Hero, they don’t all come in capes, some come clothed in scrubs and white coats.

She does get paid for her Job ofcourse, but guess what? no one pays her for being kind, you can be the meanest nurse in a hospital and still get paid. I know that what people don’t understand usually they want to find an excuse or fault in it, but believe me, some people are just nice, without an ulterior motive they are just nice plain and simple.

There are Heroes out there who work from 9 to 5 every day making people's day, doing jobs that no one else will with so much efficiency and contentment it's beyond comprehension, and yet sometimes the most they get is a pat on the back and an income to just get by. And am not just talking about Nurses and Doctors, they are but one example,.

Imagine if you could Be a Hero or a Hero's side Kick, would you do it? It doesn’t take superpowers, it just takes a kind heart.
