"A necessary Evil"
I was intently listening to a discussion among intellectuals one day when one of them said something that left me puzzled, he said “I am going to suggest a necessary evil in order for us to overcome our unfair predicament”, it wasn’t the first time I had come across the phrase “a necessary evil” but this time I took time to consider it. Fighting fire with fire, the idea that sometimes to overcome a bad situation we need to consider using a way that is morally objectionable, and that somehow the end justifies the means.
“He who fights monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.” (Friendrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil).
When you stare at the abyss, the abyss eventually stares back at you. It is when you reach that point that you realize that in your mind there is a thin line between good and evil. In the journey to vanquish evil, do the ends justify the means? Should we employ any means necessary, even that which makes us lose our humanity?? All in the name of ridding ourselves an evil. The truth is that in order for us to rise above the monsters we must not abandon our humanity, for it is our humanity that will in the end save us.
Otherwise, we become worse than that which we oppose, in that we knew better and yet we stooped low to our enemy’s level. Maybe at a certain point, they also had to do what was necessary to overcome an evil, and so they had to employ the most vail methods (unthinkable) but like a soldier who has been backed into a corner they had to, to their minds it was a necessary evil, moreover, the ends will justify the means, or so they thought.
“Thus, do I counsel you, my brethren, despise all in whom the impulse to punish is powerful.” Be wise and look in the mirror before you go to war, before there is blood on the dance floor make sure you are not dancing to the tunes of the Devil and become his own advocate as you shed your own brothers/fathers/sisters/country men’s blood. (political violence)
There is no place beyond good and evil, when you stop upholding your principles then you have crossed the line from good to evil, those who give an excuse that the lines between good and bad are thin are but giving an excuse for failure to keep the principles of morality. And so in an effort to console their own hearts, they convince themselves that the laws of morality cannot be kept…that it is impossible to be good all the while, but come to think of it wasn’t that the Devils accusation against God??, and yet the patriarchs and prophets, great Men of old, Heroes of faith kept the law, not of themselves but it is Christ the innocent Lamb who strengthens all even to do good. When I look at a sinner, I see no way that he can be saved, but when I look at Christ, I see no way in which a sinner can be lost.
(we want change!!)
(he deserved it!!)
(the system is rigged we might as well take advantage!!)
(well it was not fairly prepared so why not!!)
To what extent do we allow bad situations to change who we are and if we are pushed…are we going to be happy with what we will become?? What good is a victory over evil if in the end, we cannot bear to look in the mirror??.
