False gods

“Man will rise no higher than his conceptions of truth, purity, and holiness……The worshipers of false gods clothed their deities with human attributes and passions, and thus their standard of character was degraded to the likeness of sinful humanity” Patriarchs and Prophets

It has always been a terrifying idea to contemplate the idea of being at the mercy of these gods as represented by mythology or traditions. Take for example the Greek gods, they are portrayed as having human attributes, feelings and passions, sometimes even more base than those of humans. Rulers of the human race are seemingly more base than humans themselves. It is a terrifying thought that if indeed we were ruled by such gods then indeed there would be no hope of justice, I have read of some stories where these gods could be bribed by some human effort or corrupted to an extent where eternity could be actualized not by virtue but by corrupt means. Think about it genuinely, if we were at the mercy of these gods would there really be justice? It is actually true that the fallibility of their character stands as a witness against their godhood that in the end, they are but a fiction of the human mind because they are imperfect even by the standards of the human scale.

To worship: love unquestioningly and uncritically or to excess; venerate as an idol…idolize, idolize, worship, hero-worship, revere, idolize, idolize, worship, hero-worship, revere.

Human beings have an intense desire to worship something, whether it be soccer, a movie star, a job, a partner, a career, a lifestyle even self or an actual idol, we all worship something some to a greater extent than others. But the propensity to worship is there and will always to exerted towards something or someone, and so for some instead of worshiping one who actually deserves worship, we have created our perception of god and clothed these gods with human passions and attributes and our standards of character have thus been left in the gutters. It is a law of nature, “by beholding we become changed,” and as these gods are the example we choose to be a standard of our morality we can never raise higher than them, and our conception of these gods is typical of our current societies riddled with perverse thoughts and evil as the human mind can concoct.

Extravagance pervades all circles of society. Integrity is sacrificed for luxury and display. They that make haste to be rich pervert justice and oppress the poor, and “slaves and souls of men” are still bought and sold. Fraud and bribery and theft stalk unrebuked in high places and in low. The issues of the press teem with records of murder—crimes so cold-blooded and causeless that it seems as though every instinct of humanity were blotted out. And these atrocities have become of so common occurrence that they hardly elicit a comment or awaken surprise. The spirit of anarchy is permeating all nations, and the outbreaks that from time to time excite the horror of the world are but indications of the pent-up fires of passion and lawlessness that, having once escaped control, will fill the earth with woe and desolation.” Patriarchs and Prophets

The Great Hope

It is true that this world was created by God, the Creator, the one and only true God who deserves our worship because He created us. Perfect in character, upholds justice and is not subject to human passion and frailties which makes me rest at night knowing that we are not left to the injustice of false gods. The world may try to pervert our perception and conception of Him but we have the great pearl of wisdom to reveal to us who God really is, history and revelation stand as stern witnesses distinguishing him from all false gods and He stands vindicated as the one and only Creator of our universe. It's an interesting and comforting thought knowing that even as much as this world will be degraded, judgment by a righteous God will be enacted, every action He takes being actuated by love that we cannot fathom. Now that’s a God worth worshiping.
